Valkyrie

Uh, this was good. Not much of an opinion on it other than it was better executed than I expected. At first I went “lol recent Tom Cruise” and expected some over-dramatized account of the Stauffenberg case, but that wasn’t the case with the actual product. Was very serious but not exaggeratedly so, and didn’t feel too artificial, perhaps except for the extent to which the operation was carried out (However, upon further research, this “exception” is not a valid point of complaint as this actually happened in the original historical record.)

Also had detailed recreations of settings and uniforms, and solid but ultimately unexceptional acting by all members of the cast. Failed to make me feel attached to any of the characters or otherwise stir me up emotionally, but I was unable to find any glaring flaws other than the “interesting” mix of accents and the non-Der Untergang-quality portrayal of Hitler (but honestly, nobody can top Bruno Ganz, and this complaint is technically quite invalid in the first place as Hitler barely appeared in Valkyrie). In all, Valkyrie is not a waste of anyone’s time, and is at least a satisfactory starting point for getting acquainted with the 20 July Plot. Perhaps the numerous German films about the same subject are much better than Valkyrie, but I unfortunately cannot readily confirm this.

Oh, and the typeface used in the credits is spectacularly appropriate and aesthetically pleasing. I was very pleased with it and would much like to know what it is. 75/100
